What is Bayer Advanced?

You might have heard the name Bayer before without any connection to the pest control products. You are right. The Bayer Advanced trademark is a small branch of the Bayer Global group. One of the major pharmaceutical giants in the world.

Company that was founded in Germany in 1863 it is still primarily known as the one that started to produce Aspirin.

Nowadays the company has a wide range of products including:

  • Over-the-counter drugs.
  • General and Specialty medicines.
  • Polymers.
  • Adhesives.
  • Coatings.
  • Pesticides etc.

Bayer Advanced trademark is known for more than 50 years. This is a brand that is connected to the Bayer Crop Science, which main purposes are agrochemical research and genetic engineering.

Bayer Advanced doesn’t specifically make only termite fighting chemicals, but generally advertises itself as the ones to provide perfect solutions for taking care of the lawn and garden problems. They have an Environmental Science department that is settled in North Carolina.

This trademark is being very certain about what makes them different from the other players on the market. The main features of their public profile are:

  1. Guarantee of your money return if the product doesn’t fulfil its function.
  2. Money saving ideas for customers. One of them is that usually the products of Bayer Advanced are at least 2in1 or 3in1, this way you can buy only one product for several problems, instead of packing up three different ones.
  3. Promise of the easy DIY instructions and general simplicity of use.
  4. Mostly one step products that have effect from the first application.
What we can learn from this information is that the Bayer Advanced has a good backup of Giant Multinational Company, well-known and big enough to allow itself proper research and quality control. This fact alone can build up you trust in their products.

Bayer termite control products: review

The range of specific of Bayer Advanced termite killer products brand is not too wide. Basically it includes just three items at this moment:

  1. Carpenter Ant & Termite Killer.
  2. Termite & Carpenter Bee Killer Plus Foam.
  3. Termite Killer Granules.

I suggest we check those methods one by one and see if they are as good as the company trying to advertise them.

Carpenter Ant & Termite Killer Plus

This product is an insecticide concentrate that is contained in plastic blue 32-ounce bottle. The price is around $20 for a bottle. The information about this treatment by the producing company is:

  • Kills on contact.
  • Kills carpenter ants, termites, carpenter bees, ants, fleas, ticks, crickets, spiders, scorpions, centipedes, flies and more.
  • Allows to cover the area as big as 21,000sq. ft.
  • Can be used inside the house, outdoors, lawns etc.
The appearance of the product is white viscous liquid. Though the Company states that the use is easy, you are still recommended to wear full body protection when working with it. This includes goggles, rubber gloves, long-sleeve shirt, long pants and shoes with socks.

It’s listed hazards are:

  1. Eye irritation.
  2. Burning and irritation of the skin.
  3. Upper respiratory tract irritation.
  4. Poisoning if swallowed.

This chemical is highly toxic for the fish and aquatic invertebrates. So it has to be handled with extreme caution when it comes to releasing it near any water supplies, rivers or ponds.

Photo 4Also it kills the bees, even the ones you would like to live, so keep it away from the insects you don’t mean to harm.

It is also recommended to apply the insecticide in calm weather when rain is not predicted for the next 24 hours.

This precaution is taken for the product not to be washed off to the drainage system, through which it can harm the environment.

Important! Remember not to wash in any indoor or outdoor drainage the remaining of the bayer termite concentrate, when you wish to dispose of the half-empty container.

So, let’s get to the point. How to use it? First of all, there are things not to do:

  • Once again, don’t use it if it can get into any water source, well or cistern.
  • Don’t apply it to the flowering plants at a daytime when they are visited by the bees. Better use it in the early morning or at dusk.
  • Don’ use it on the plants that are grown for food.
  • Don’t use the spoons or other things that’s been in contact with insecticide for eating later.
  • Don’t use it in or on electrical equipment (liquid, electricity … you know).

This product is supposed to be used for the prevention of the subterranean termite infestation. So if you need to use it for the soil treatment around the building or any other wooden construction you should do the following:

  1. You dig the trench nest to foundation, removing any scrap wood found in the process.
  2. Apply needed amount of diluted insecticide to the trench and then fill it back with the wet soil.
  3. That’s it. Normally you don’t need to reapply the barrier fully, but possibly only to make some spot treatment if chemical barrier was disrupted.

If you use it to protect the smaller constructions such as the telegraph poles, then pour the insecticide in the hole you wish to install the object into (pole, post, fence) before its placement.

So, in short, the Carpenter Ant & Termite Killer Plus is:

  • Highly toxic insecticide for fish and common bees.
  • Is used only for the prevention and not treatment of the Formosan or other Subterranean termites’ species.
  • In dilution with water is used as a soil barrier termite treatment method.

Termite & Carpenter Bee Killer Plus Foam

This is another form and another combination of the pests killing treatment. The price of the 18 ounces’ bottle varies between $10 and $15.

For the general use and health hazards, the recommendations are the same as the ones for the carpenter ants & bayer termite spray. So I will not repeat them. Let’s see what is different about this product.

Photo 6The foam has an interesting quality to expand in the areas it’s applied to.

So the major idea of the foaming insecticide is to be able to apply it to the small holes’ and with its expansion to reach the insects that are hiding deep inside the wood.

So when this product will be useful you ask? Well it’s a localized solution.

Normally, in case of the termites you will use it for the small colonies of drywood termites that are nesting in just one object or piece of furniture.

The foam, the same way as the spray kills on contacts. So, to get to the termites, you need to somehow apply it into the wood. Usually drywood termites make holes in the wooden surface through which they push the frass out of the nest.

Otherwise you can drill a small hole that will break into the workers’ corridors. Now all you need to do is to shake the bottle and apply the foam inside the holes. By expanding it should reach the insects inside the wood and, well, kill them.

This method is nice one if you’re dealing with the small infestation and tiny colony. But it’s too local to be recommended as the best way to stop the termite infestation in your house.

Termite Killer granules

This is the only Bayer Advanced Termite fighting product that is made for the termites specifically and doesn’t kill all pests in your household at once. The price of the 9 lbs. container is reaching $50 in Home Depot stores.

This product is aimed for the extermination of the active subterranean termites’ infestation. It is a soil treatment method with exceptionally easy way to use.

The promise is – you just sprinkle the granules to the ground and water them, and the water will drain it down, killing the termites that come in contact with it and hopefully destroying the colony. One container should allow to cover up to 200 linear feet of soil.

General precautions and first aid measures if product is swallowed or absorbed in any other way are the same as for the other termite products of this brand. It also poses the same danger to the aquatic invertebrates and shouldn’t be applied next to the water sources.

There’re also other special directions for its use:

  • Don’t apply it to the hard surfaces, such as patios or driveways.
  • Don’t plant edible plants in the treated soil for at least 1 year after the application.
  • Don’t apply it to the linden, basswood and other Tilia species.

Summary

I also checked different customer opinions about Bayer Termite killer products and most of them get positive reviews and 5 star ratings, unless people don’t pay attention on the label and try to use the barrier treatments as localized insecticide or try to exterminate a subterranean colony with foam.

So let’s summaries the major points about the Bayer Group Products:

Photo 9

  • Those are rather strong chemicals, not eco-friendly products, that are posing the treat to the fish, aquatic invertebrates and bees. Should be used with great caution around water supplies.
  • Two out of three products are wide range insecticides that will take care of more than one pest problem at once.
  • The soil treatments are recommended more for preventive treatment rather than fighting the active infestation. So if you have subterranean termites already thriving in your structure – call the professionals.
  • All the products are easy to apply and don’t require special equipment or training.
