Our world is populated everywhere possible – from the deepest grounds, to the highest sky, from the darkest water, to the brightest sands.
And every living thing on our planet is some how interacting with another.
But that doesn’t mean, that all of them give everyone any benefit, it’s completely opposite: there are hundreds, if not thousands of parasite species out there, ready to attack you at any point of your routine life.

The most popular and infamous parasite types are:
- Termites.
- Mosquitoes.
- Fleas.
- Ticks.
And many others. Some might think, that if they didn’t exist it would make everything for everyone better. Yes, it of course would, unless you think about other species. Let’s say, frogs.
They eat mosquitoes, flies, and other flying insects, but without these sources of food – they will shortly become extinct, and, as everything and everyone is bound with each other, as frogs are someone’s food as well, species like eagles will also die out.
And it goes on and on, until it hits us, humans, and we lose another type of food. And the list of things that might (and will) happen goes on and on. Hence, this is why we can only defend from parasites – but can’t kill them completely. But in this article we are gonna go over termites, and how to defeat them!Learn more about subterranean termites: signs of their activity; best methods of treatment and DIY methods. Anti-termite powders
So, how do you kill those awful creatures, that even your enemy wouldn’t want. First of all, it’s gotta be said, that keeping them living for too long will result in exponentially increasing damage dealt to your property. Nonetheless, there are, as always, multiple effective ways of dealing with termites.
Insecticides, like powders, are the most popular, and, in fact, the most effective method. As in modern world, every chemical component, even if not supposed to, can give harm to something. As an example, remember cleaning chemicals.
They are not supposed to give harm, although many pets and even humans can develop and allergy for them, to say the least. But on the positive side the chemicals are astonishingly effective, and can deal with anything; if they can’t – just increase the amount and etc.
Methods, such as removing everything that might attract termites and etc. They don’t always work, but it’s a good alternative.
So, let’s say you’ve chosen to use termites killer powder. It’s effectiveness is dependent on how well you use it. And, as a problem, many people use it incorrectly, which may lead to much more dangerous living conditions and small to no effectiveness in battle with parasites, such as, of course, termites.
On the other hand, if used correctly it may stop the infestation ASAP, and prevent it from starting again. And many types of dust insecticides can be no harm to your family, as they may be made from safe-ish ingredients, such as plants. Not that you can sleep with them in bed every day, but they are definitely safer than chemicals. Here you can learn more information about another effective termite control remedies: Bora-Care, Boric acid, Borate, Fipronil, Chlorpyrifos, Chlordane, Borax, Timbor, Termidor, Terminator, Phantom, Lorsban, Biflex, Terro. You can choose different forms, such as – foam, liquid.
Types of insecticide dust
There are some types of powder, that differ from each other by effectiveness, and toxic harm. So, there are three most commonly met powder types, and those one’s are:
- Made-from-plants powder, otherwise known as botanical. The oldest existing dry powder on the market, that keeps improving over the years. The biggest positive side of it is the amount of harm made to the environment. It is not completely inexistent, but definitely close to zero.
Not only that, it is a nudge cheaper than other dry-powder types out there. On the other side of this coin, this powder can sometimes be less effective, than the alternatives. An example of this powder would be the product, that goes by the name of “OMRI”.
- Silica dust insecticides. Being the most popular, it is also the most effective way of dealing with termites. And, as always, to counter-side it, it is very toxic and not cheap. But with improvement of natural dusts, the silica one is becoming less popular. And it is understandable – would you use a very toxic dust for pretty much the same amount of effectiveness, as the non-toxic botanical dusts have. Good product would be “Tri-Die”.
- Boric acid powders. Mainly used for baits, as they only act when taken in as food. Quite toxic, very effective, but, as said above, harder to use due to them being termite food-poison. A good brand is “Bora-care”.
Here you can learn more information about termite bait systems: Advance, Green, CSIRO, Nemesis, Exterra, Firstline, Terminate. Also find out how to make baits by yourself and how to refill them?
Toxicity
Firstly, all of those powder types are toxic, but some are more, some are less. Nonetheless, you should know what they can result in, and what harm do they provide for you, your family, pets, home and etc. So, first of all, as stated earlier, the toxicity depends on the ingredients of the powder. As a result, botanical is less toxic, than chemical and etc. Again, a totally toxic-free powder does not exist, or if it does, it isn’t as effective as powder, which is full of chemicals and/or plants. Secondly, as you should have already known, people and pets are also very affected from the insecticides, as every poison would poison something else.
In case of a strong infestation, you must abandon your house for the time-being, until the problem is solved. Either way, your pets would be better off living somewhere else when dealing with parasites. If not dealing with ground termites, and/or not poisoning the garden as well, your dog can live outside of the house, if it fits you.
Otherwise, you can give it to friends or relatives. If you don’t move your pet, as most of the dust would be on your feet level, it might eat/lick/sniff the substance and the results would be undesirable. This poison can kill anything, either insects or mammals.
Here you can learn more information about effective treatment method called tenting (fumigation): dangers for termites, preparing for fumigation and cleaning after, how long does this procedure last?
Termite powder treatment
First thing you need to know when applying any type of powder insecticide, is how much do you need.
Don’t ever pour too much, or you risk contaminating the area, and/or wasting the powder in not required places. Also, you shouldn’t apply dust on open surfaces, as this would be the least effective method of using the insecticide.
Insects are not as silly to walk on open surface just where the dust is, are they?
You should add the dust in cracks, holes and gaps around your house and other possible entry/exit points of termites (and other parasites), so that they wouldn’t be able to do anything.
Secondly, even if you don’t necessarily need a face mask (but it is better to wear it, you newer know), you definitely should wear cleaning gloves, so that even if powder hits your skin, it wouldn’t cause any irritation or else.
Also, some dusts (like pyrethrin termite dusting powder) require to be applied as evenly as possible on the ground, as they only will act if in contact with the parasite. The bigger the area, the more possible it is for them to interact with it.
If you follow these steps, then your insecticides would act much more efficiently and faster, compare to if you would totally disapprove them. If you want a infestation-free area around you – you better look into the instructions!Useful articles

Conclusion
To round everything up, remember, that no one is immune to insect infestations and else. When it comes – you have to deal with it. Another thing you need to be cautious about is the simple fact, that termites love wood – obviously – this is their food.
Hence, there’s a much higher possibility of meeting them in a wooden house, than in a full-on brick house. As well as this, termites appear more often in humid and warm environments.
Keep this in mind, especially if you fit into the scope of things. It will help you prepare for everything.
And finally, pay attention: if you find the problem as early as possible, you will deal with it as fast, and drastically decrease the chance of infestation happening again.
And although not necessary, but it is better to have a full-on pesticide control over your house, asking the specialists to do it.
They certainly know that to do as it’s their job, and they most definitely have a vast experience on the subject. That way you are certainly going to cut the problem from the root. Remember to always follow the rules to not endanger you and your close ones to chemicals that the insecticides may contain. And finally, we wish you luck with getting rid of termites and saving your precious house from th enemy.
